I was looking at essential oils for seasonal affective disorder (SAD) the other day and noticed that one of my all-time favourite oils is a goodie.
Most people have never heard of Eucalyptus Staigeriana, but it is the one I use the most in my office as it is so head-clearing and uplifting. It’s quite lemony for a eucalyptus, nothing like normal types you’d use for clearing your chesty cold, although it is anti-viral so also very protective.
It is thought to have a really profound effect on emotions. It is uplifting, anti-depressant and has been used in the treatment of ME for fatigue. I can see why. I find it quite joyous to use. It’s a nice oil to use when travelling to keep you alert but calm. It’s said to be great for times of turmoil.
It’s not that easy to get, actually, but I get mine here.
Alternative Oils
If you’ve not got any of that, or fancy something even simpler, try sweet orange oil, or mandarin is even better. I call that my cheerfulness oil. Did you know, too, that sweet orange oil is one of the most effective antibacterial surface cleaners – just on a damp cloth on its own – fabulous and makes your house smell gorgeous. Not direct on wood, obvs; I’m meaning kitchen, door handles etc.
If you’re not sure and want a ready-made blend, try Brighten, which is a lovely uplifting citrussy scent. Festive is good if you want a warming, comforting Christmassy smell. Serenity for calm and tranquillity or Sacred Space is much deeper and grounding, a great oil for yoga and meditation rooms, I have that one myself.
Ways to use the oils
I find the easiest is to put a drop in the palm of my hands, cup my nose and inhale deeply – that’ll wake you up! A drop on a tissue/hanky works well, or use an electric diffuser – not water ones preferably, unless you change the water daily – who wants bacteria and mould wafting around the room?! The little burners are OK as the water will evaporate. Neals Yard do a nice simple one, but you can get them all over the place. There’s a lovely modern version here from H&B and Dunelm has a sophisticated black one that’s really cheap.
You could also use a couple of drops for an uplifting morning bath or in the shower tray, or for a relaxing, grounding bath in the evening.
Anyway, maybe make nice inexpensive gifts, too? Santa could buy you a gift for under the tree – you’ve been good this year 😉
Enjoy x
