I saw a great new term today which I thought I would share with you: the obesity syndemic, rather than epidemic. Here’s the quote I saw:
Over the past three decades we have witnessed an exponential increase in both the adverse metabolic impact of obesity and the exposure and accumulation of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), toxic metals, and endotoxicity. These problems couple together to create what has been termed a “syndemic” where two or more factors intersect to multiple the adverse impact on health outcomes.

In other words, the increase in environmental (and therefore body) toxicity and the increase in obesity are greatly linked; one impacting the other. It just reminded me of why I have always started any weight loss programme with the good old ‘Detox Box’ as it used to be called. Some of you will no doubt remember it – and it’s power to solve most things, it must be said!
The Detox Box was a 12 week programme using a set of supplements from Nutrigold, which I adapted into the Gut Plan. It’s a complete gut, liver, gallbladder detox because the vast majority of us are holding onto toxins in fat. The body has to stick it somewhere to protect us, and that is in fatty tissue. The more toxins you are taking in; the more fat you will build.
Of course, when people start to lose fat, those toxins come out of their storage holding place and can make people feel really poorly, so I included a really good supplement to help you conjugate the toxins in phase 1 and 2 liver pathways and eliminate them effectively.
Anyway, it reminded me of this. The syndemic of toxicity and obesity – not surprising really, when you look at it like that, is it?!
You can see the Gut Plan here. Always start a weight loss programme with an effective detox with loads of liver support. You can see more about my weight loss approach here too.
In fact, whilst I’m on the subject: there are, in fact, genetic reasons why some people put on more weight than others, or can’t lose it as easily – despite people poo-poohing that idea over the years. It turns out genetics does make a big difference in some cases. Have a look at the genetic tests here – the Lifecode Metabolics report or the DNA Diet ones are specifically about how you metabolise food, for example. Once you see where any weaknesses may be, you can start to address/offset them.
I could honestly wax lyrical about weight loss – what about inflammation levels, hormones, cortisol/adrenals, thyroid, blood sugar control, insulin dysregulation etc etc? And people say it is just calories in: calories out. NO IT ISN’T! We should stop fat-shaming people who have what is rapidly becoming a medically-recognised issue. Would we shame someone has diabetes or arthritis? No, we wouldn’t.
Oh, went off on a rant there a bit, sorry! Anyway: begin with a proper fat-release detox and that will help 😉
