Toxic Loo Rolls? Er, No Thanks!

Did you read this piece recently in The Guardian about ‘forever’ toxic chemicals called PFAs in loo paper? Shocking. Have a read here:

Toxic ‘forever chemicals’ found in toilet paper around the world

Research finds waste flushed down toilets and sent to sewage plants probably responsible for significant source of water pollution

PFAS are a class of about 14,000 chemicals typically used to make thousands of consumer products resist water, stains and heat. They are called “forever chemicals” because they do not naturally break down, and they are linked to cancer, fetal complications, liver disease, kidney disease, autoimmune disorders and other serious health issues.

Do you use a non-toxic version you can recommend? I have just ordered some Cheeky Panda bamboo ones – I’ll let you know how I get on with them. I fancied the Who Gives A Crap? ones just because of the name, I confess!

  1. Horrifying isn’t it – must be that kitchen rolls and tissues are similarly contaminated. Cheeky Panda loo roll is good though, didn’t like Who Gives a Crap.

    1. Good to know, thanks Karen – I’ve ordered Cheeky Panda. Yes, I wondered about other paper products like kitchen roll. Not thought of tissues!

  2. I was using WGAC but then they sent an email saying they were changing their loo roll to include bleach so I’m going to try cheeky panda when I next need to order. A shame as I did like WGAC and their fun little anecdotes on the paper the rolls came in.

    1. Adding bleach! Hardly fits their supposed eco credentials, does it, Kamla!? I like the packaging too and the little quotes. They had some in an Air B&B I recently stayed in and I liked them but bit thin, hoping Cheeky Panda is smoother and thicker at 3 ply.

  3. I just can’t understand how this is allowed, I only realised one brand I bought by mistake had something toxic when my poor bottom became really sore and itchy, took me a while to work it was fragranced when I blew my nose and had an asthma attack from it. Nasty stuff. I’m using Naked Sprout which I love. I share a huge box with my mum to make it more affordable. it’s really good loo roll too.

    1. Oh not used those, I shall try some, thanks Ruth. Yes, amazing how many times I have to tell people to stop using fragranced paper and their anal ‘eczema’ suddenly clears up! Not good about asthma attack, eek!

  4. Hi Micki…thanks for all you do….re the bamboo…we used it for a year and realised it was not degrading in the sewage pipes to our septic tank. No more bamboo toilet paper for us. We are using the non bamboo WGAC now and have not had any problems. Bamboo in our experience does not degrade fast enough.
