Clinic News to start with…

TECH TRIALS: ORAL HEALTH, MIGRAINE. Remember I said I was going to try some new health tech – a water flosser, sonic toothbrush and the Cefaly Dual for migraine? Well, it didn’t go that well, unfortunately. I had to send both the toothbrush and flosser back. The toothbrush was great, really liked the gentler sonic approach, but then the head broke in half in my mouth; I was spitting out bristles for days! I’ve since got a different sonic brush but I actually don’t think it is as good.

The flosser just didn’t work well. I couldn’t get the water to come out unless I held it at some strange arm-twisting angle and it got on my nerves stopping and starting all the time. Also, it was much harsher than the ones I’ve used previously and made my hyper-sensitive mouth bleed. Not good.

The company did take them back, though, even though it had taken me longer than 30 days to trial them – it always takes me a long time to introduce things as you know because of my MCAS and having to do one change at a time.

I have only just started with the Cephaly Dual this week but boy it’s hard-going. So far, I have only managed about 10 minutes on either the preventative and treatment settings. It builds up over the first 10 mins or so and you can lessen the intensity, although I find the tiny does-it-all button on the front not easy to use so half the time I’m not sure what level I’m on!

I think, as hypersensitives with our neurons firing too close to threshold, we could really do with building it up from the very first few intensity levels until our neurons start to become stronger and attuned to it. There is no way I could do it for 20 mins, let alone an hour at full intensity. It feels very harsh on the head to me. I read someone describe it as ‘someone digging their sharp elbows into your forehead’ which is about right! I will persevere, though, just much more slowly as it does have great potential and credibility. Wish me luck!

Has anyone tried different tens/TMJ tech for migraine you can recommend?

LONG COVID. Increasing evidence of link between Long Covid, ME/CFS and Dysautonomia (eg POTs).

TGF: CORN. Five allergenic [Note: this is relating to IgE Classical allergy here] components of maize, such as Zea m 1, Zea m 8, Zea m 12, Zea m 14, and Zea m 25 have been identified; among them Zea m 1 and Zea m 14 are the major allergens. Zea m 14 (non-specific lipid transfer protein) is a highly resistant protein, capable of withstanding heat, enzymatic, and chemical treatments. Maize has been found to cross-react with other cereals, such as rice, wheat, barley, etc. Besides this, maize has also shown to cross-react with fruits, such as peach, cherry, cowpea, apricot, grapes as well as pollens, such as grass and Platanus pollens. TGF: ORGAN SUPPLEMENTS. APE Nutrition have launched a new range of paleo nose to tail organ supplements including grass fed beef organ capsules and – a first for me – a seafood alternative made from oysters. The beef supplement above includes kidney so could be useful for raising DAO naturally too to encourage histamine clearance. These kind of foods can be very helpful as an alternative multi as they are very rich in nutrients. You can see them all at ND here. I’ve added them to the TGF Supplement Master List.

KETO/PROTEIN. ND have a new range of clean protein (mostly pea) powders, nutrition powders for adults and kids and protein bars. Take a look.

RECIPE: TGF. How about this clever way to get more Vitamin C into you or your kids? Mix Camu Camu powder with a liquid of your choice – coconut water, a juice eg. pineapple, watermelon, mango or a nut/seed/soya milk, add some sweetener such as honey, agave, stevia drops and fill some ice lolly moulds. Freeze and enjoy – they’ll never know they’re eating nutritious Vitamin C. Mwahahaha….

DIET: DANDELION COFFEE. I see there is a new stronger, filter blend of this coffee alternative for those of us who like the stronger taste but not the extra caffeine! AQUASOL.

TGF: NANO MINERALS. Always looking for grain free ways to increase our nutrients since finding a multi is a nightmare for us TGF (TrulyGlutenFree) people. I see The Health Factory have launched a range of nano minerals in purified water and some fossilised sea coral mineral powders from Okinawa (sustainably sourced). Via ND.

ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION. Honestly, why does it take them so long to catch up with things natural medicine practitioners have known for years?? B6 and B12 help anxiety and depression. No, really?

DIET: PREBIOTIC COFFEE. Did you know you can add a heat-stable prebiotic powder to your coffee? Great idea. And great for your gut and for boosting SCFAs (short chain fatty acids), particularly crucial if you are food-sensitive. Watch the reel here. They used this one. It’s flavourless and dissolves in water.

DIABETES/BLOOD SUGAR. We’re slowly starting to see specific probiotic blends for conditions come through now, which is exciting as the research is being formulated into actual products. Here’s a first: a probiotic for helping to balance blood sugar so great for pre-diabetics and diabetics alike. Designed to help manage sugar metabolism, avoid sugar spikes and protect the gut lining. Clever. GLUCOSE CONTROL. We really must get more of a handle on this – easily-preventable – condition, especially given the fact that NHS spending on diabetes drugs has gone up a staggering 30% in the last six years alone! MEDSCAPE.

GUT: IBS. Another new probiotic, try this alternative probiotic if your gut problems are wind/bloating and alternating diarrhoea and constipation. GI REPAIR.

PRACTITIONERS: SKIN. I note that Nutri Advanced have launched a new skin protocol for ideas on eczema, acne, psoriasis etc. Check it out.

DIET: HASKAP POWDER. A new superfood: haskap berries. Around 800 pure freeze-dried powdered haskap berries and nothing else. 3 times the antioxidants, and 4 times the anthocyanins of blueberries. Add some to your smoothies.

DIET: BEER. Another one from researchers desperate to find good news for drinking beer, methinks! Turns out non-alcoholic beer (sorry) can improve microbiome diversity. MEDSCAPE.

FERTILITY. Fertility rates increased for the first time in ages last year, I can’t help thinking it was all the extra pandemic-time we had on our hands in 2021! MEDSCAPE

CHRONIC ILLNESS: CRANIAL DRAINAGE There is some speculation that in chronic illness (or even just sinus issues), cranial drainage to encourage lymphatic flow in the brain is important. It’s not something I’ve come across before, but this Perrin Technique video is designed to help with just that. When I watched it, I realised I do many of these techniques by instinct when I have a migraine/sinus headache, go figure!

OK, that’s all folks! Hope you all found something of interest there. Please let me know and share to anyone you think it could help – ask them to sign up on this blog or newsletter so they can get the good stuff direct to them, thank you.

Retiring, but loads of help still here!
