Calprotectin is one of the most useful inflammatory markers on a gut test. It can be a bit of a shock when it looks high, but actually the numbers mean different things. It can be a very useful way to differentiate between IBS type issues causing mild inflammation or Inflammatory Bowel Disease like Crohn’s or Colitis. Here’s a quick summary for you, which I’ve adapted from TDL labs.
Calprotectin : <50 ug/g
Not indicative of IBD. Consider IBS, or is the IBD under control if you are on meds/diet for that?
Calprotectin: >50 ug/g
Calprotectin: 50-150 ug/g repeat the calprotectin in 2 weeks as it can be a temporary flare up or a blip. Also consider other potential causes eg. infection (quite common I find) or use of NSAIDS like ibuprofen.
If the Repeated Calprotectin result is: 100-250 ug/g – ask GP for a referral to gastroenterology.
Calprotectin: >250 ug/g – ask GP for an urgent referral to gastroenterology.
