I am often asked how you can protect yourself from any deleterious effects if you’re on hormone replacement therapy. So, here are my top 3 HRT-protective supplements for you.
First: methylation multi. We need plenty of methylated B vitamins to ensure that we are metabolising oestrogens and other hormones down effectively. Many people have lower-than-optimal methylation. See here for more on methylation. So, make sure it’s kept tip-top and you can do that with a multi. I usually recommend this one because it has good dosages of the methylated B vits, extra K2, Vitamin D and boron for bone health, 1:1 ratio of magnesium to calcium (most favour calcium, which is wrong in my view), enough zinc, chromium to help insulin balance (and therefore weight gain) and some really supportive anti-ageing, cancer-protective antioxidants such as green tea and lycopene.
Second: a cruciferous concentrate such as Broccoli Plus or the stronger (better, but more expensive) BroccoProtect. These provide support for phase 2 liver detox so you don’t get a build up of excess hormones.
Third: glutathione. An all-round protector, basically. Cellular energy, detoxification and much more. Most people I come across have low levels of this really important antioxidant, mainly because they’re missing a glutathione gene (like me). The best forms are liposomal and s-acetyl glutathione, which I prefer.
Not on HRT?
Then this is my fave. It is a really good blend of all of the above (poss a bit low on glutathione, but plenty of NAC which you make it out of). It contains phyto-oestrogens like flax and soya isoflavones so I don’t think it should be taken with HRT as they would compete with the receptors for your HRT oestrogen.
There you go. Hope that helps. Don’t forget plenty of sleep (these innovative patches might help if you’re getting the common meno-insomnia). Lots of walking and weight training 2-3 times a week to build bone. And make sure you are following an insulin-controlling diet to keep the dreaded belly fat off – highish protein and low carb. There are also some hormone-balancing recipes I’ve created for you here. And a menopause cake!
For more on menopause, see my Menopause Factsheet and there are plenty of blog posts I’ve written for you over the years.
Hope that helps x
