OK, the last ever Purehealth News today for you. Bit sad, I know. As I said to someone the other day: I am half terrified, half sad, half relieved and half excited for what’s to come next – whatever that is. That is a LOT of halves, but you get my gist!
I hope you find something useful here and that you have enjoyed all my Purehealth newsletters and posts – thousands of them! – over the past 25 years. I’m going to so miss writing them for you. I am a writer at heart, though, so I do know I’ll be writing something. I might even try to finish or serialise the outstanding books before I toddle off into the sunset Purehealth-wise, at least.
If you would like to continue to follow me and see what I do next – come and forge a new path with me on here. More joy. Less illness. That’s all I’ve got so far! Where will we go next…?

Top Tips for…..Indigestion

‘Tis the season of over-indulgence. Get some of these ready in case of extra roast potato-weakness.
These are all short-term acute remedy ideas for indigestion, not necessarily for the long term. If indigestion is recurrent, it’s better that we find the underlying cause – which in a lot of people is actually TOO MUCH acid. I know!
Check my factsheet on the A-Z for more on that: GERD/INDIGESTION/ACID REFLUX. I’ve put an easy at-home check on there to see if that could be your issue, try it. It usually amazes people!
H pylori infection is another really big cause, and most people have no idea they have it. Check the factsheet on H Pylori out here.
So, instead of reaching for the antacids, this year, why not protect your stomach lining and try these natural remedies? They’re useful to have in all year round, of course, too.

Turmeric. Clinical research shows that taking turmeric 500 mg four times daily for a week relieves indigestion in 64% more patients than taking placebo. There’s also evidence that curcumin, the main constituent in turmeric, can reduce severity similarly to omeprazole – although it doesn’t offer additional benefits when taken together with omeprazole, so it’s no good doing both.
Artichoke. Taking artichoke leaf extract 640 mg three times daily has been shown to improve symptoms and quality of life in people with mild dyspepsia. It stimulates bile flow. Actually, though, I think if artichoke helps, it’s likely because a person is not digesting fats down that well, so you might do better with a synergistic compound that includes lipase, the fat-digesting enzyme, like this.
Peppermint. My fave. I use a drop of peppermint essential oil in hot water, but that’s maybe a bit strong for most people! Peppermint and caraway tea can work really well. Some clinical research shows that taking a combination of peppermint and caraway oil improves reduces indigestion, pain and mild stomach spasms. Try this delayed release one.
Finally, don’t forget to do some repair work if indigestion or acid is a regular thing for you. Try this, and check the full protocol and more suggestions I’ve given on the factsheet.
I truly hope that helps. Enjoy your festivities, hopefully without any nasty after-effects. Which reminds me – don’t forget to take some milk thistle before and after any indulgent alcohol sessions to protect your liver and avoid nasty hangovers!

Have you come across Chicory syrup? New one on me. A good alternative for diabetics as it doesn’t spike blood sugar (I checked the GI is quite low) and, since it is inulin, an excellent prebiotic for the gut. I’ve got some in to try it.

Recipe of the Month

Grain and Dairy Free Panettone/Christmas Fruit Cake
Another one from the archives for you today. Nice and seasonal, and… cake 🙂
A great recipe for you from the Gluten Free Society. It uses his grain free bread mix, which you can get in the US. But it’s basically almond and coconut flour with psyllium husk so you can make it yourself in the UK pretty easily. I make a similar sandwich bread myself with flax, which acts as a binder just as well as psyllium, so I’ll share that for you too below. Mine doesn’t use coconut flour either.
First, here’s his recipe – with some adjustments from me to make it truly grain free (I’m always more strict!).
Also known as Christmas cake, my Panettone recipe is meant to be a delicious treat for the holidays
The following makes 1 large panettone, about 8 servings
Ingredients:
1/2 cup diced dried mango (no sugar added) [watch fruit has not had rice flour added to stop it sticking to machines, try to get sulphur-free too]
1/2 cup diced dried apricot (no sugar added) [ditto]
1/2 cup raisins (no sugar added) [ditto – you can change the fruits to suit you, of course]
1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice [or other juice you can tolerate]
1 ounce vodka – Optional [if using, use potato vodka, otherwise this is not grain free??!]
1 package Warrior Bread Mix [see my bread recipe below]
1/4 cup monk fruit sweetener [or stevia, honey or whatever, avoid extracts and stuff in plastic]
6 or 7 eggs (enough for 1 cup of egg whites)
1/2 cup melted vegan butter [or oil]
1/2 cup light coconut milk (from a can or carton) or almond milk [I’d make your own, cans and cartons often have corn]
1 tablespoon vanilla extract [er, no, unless it’s a non alcohol extract! Use that or vanilla powder instead]
Baking Instructions:
1. Add the dried fruit to a mixing bowl or measuring cup and pour the orange juice and vodka over it. Allow to soak for 1 hour.
2. Preheat oven to 350.
3. Stir Warrior Bread Mix and monk fruit together in a large bowl.
4. Separate the eggs. Use enough eggs until you have 1 cup of egg whites.
5. Pour the butter/oil, milk, extract/powder, and egg yolks into the warrior mix and stir to combine. Add in the juice and dried fruit and continue to stir.
6. Whisk the egg whites until it gets frothy, but before the soft peak stage, about 3 minutes.
7. Pour 1/3 of the egg whites into the bread mix and stir to combine. Repeat with the next 1/3, then the last 1/3, gently folding the whites into the mixture.
8. Pour this mixture into a small cake pan or panettone mold, filling it all the way to the top.
9. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes. Turn oven to 300 and bake another 1 hour. Turn the oven off and let it stay in the oven for the last 30 minutes.
10. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 30 minutes before serving.

OK, no Warrior Mix? Here’s a recipe similar to how I make my bread. This uses almond flour and flaxseed as that’s great for protein and phyto-oestrogens for menopause! Adapt this recipe for your panettone. (So much easier now I have eggs back, yay!)
