Really useful forum discussion here sent in by C actually referencing the importance of Vitamin D for inflammatory bowel diseases like Coeliac Disease, Crohn’s and Colitis but giving really good general Vitamin D guidelines in the process.

I am attaching a copy of an interview between a member of Crohns Forum with Dr John Connell who founded the Vitamin D Council in 2003 and who is a recognised authority on vitamin D, which you might find interesting. It confirms everything you have said about vit D deficiency and more. Good job I listened to you and got my D3 levels tested!
Aw, shucks. As I said to C, I am proud of the fact that I could have written that myself as I advocate pretty much everything he says :). Nice sometimes to know you are on the right track.
Basic Vitamin D messages from the interview are:
- get the correct test (via GP or me – there is now a really simple and cheap fingerprick test),
- take enough to get to a minimum 50ng/mL (equivalent to about 125nmol if your results say that) and don’t take a result of less than that as OK,
- take the right type – sunlight and D3 (unless you have certain conditions involving mainly kidneys and parathyroids when you may need something different),
- don’t take too much – it’s important to re-test every 3-4 months to tweak dosage; you don’t want to go over 100ng/ml.
- If you have any form of gut, malabsorption, auto-immune or inflammatory condition, get tested!
Simples! Thanks C.
