Change One Thing 3

I hope you are enjoying this new year series of posts. Catch up here if you need to.

Number 3…

Drop the latte

Having got coffee back for well over a year now, I’ve been drinking too much of it in excitement! I can’t do instant (TGF contaminated, often) or ready-ground coffee (mouldy, high histamine?), but why would you when you can get much fresher and tastier coffee when you grind fresh beans?

As a treat for myself and to celebrate the return of coffee (and food generally, to be honest), I bought a proper coffee machine a few months ago in the sales! I make fresh coffee twice a day and, in the afternoon, have been having a sort of nut milk latte with honey. It picks me up. I used to have a few squares of very dark chocolate – which is a better choice, especially given the antioxidant and magnesium levels in it – but that still doesn’t seem to agree with me, so I rarely have it now.

However, an easy win to lower my calorie intake and to help control my blood sugar better is to drop the milk sometimes. So, back to fresh black coffee in the afternoons as my pick me up still, but sans milk, or maybe no second coffee at all in future – we’ll see. I’m still very reluctant to avoid foods/restrict myself in any way after having to do it for so long, you know?

This is the machine I got. I did an awful lot of research on coffee machines before I bought this. Of course. You know me and researching to the nth degree!! I have had cheaper ones before but you never get the pressure to get a good frothy cafe-like black coffee and, if I’m going to have to have black coffee, I wanted it to be ‘proper’, you know. This is by far the best I’ve ever had. It was not cheap, by any means – get it in a sale! – but fab value as we use it several times a day. The difference the little hot water spout makes is surprising – a review chap on YT said that and it was good advice.

Oh, and the coffee beans? I get fresh Cornish ones, or these from Amazon– same chap on YT with a tip for the best beans for this machine – honestly, making coffee turns out to be a real art!

  1. I have such a coffee fetish now and have started to grind my own beans too! It makes me drink less, I try to have just one cup a day first thing with my collagen fix in it. I have my on a really tiny one from John Lewis as my kitchen is so small. One day I might splash out, but for now it’s the trusty old cafetiere or dripper. Must locate a non plastic dripper! Going non plastic bit by bit too.

    1. Excellent. Yes, people go on about having coffee is a negative thing, but for me it represents getting better, so I celebrate it! I can’t have coffee out so I made it come to me lol. I love those little Italian stove-top ones – so cute. I’ve used one for years but fancy a frothy coffee sometimes too, you know.
