‘Tis the season of over-indulgence. Get some of these ready in case of extra roast potato-weakness.
These are all short-term acute remedy ideas for indigestion, not necessarily for the long term. If indigestion is recurrent, it’s better that we find the underlying cause – which in a lot of people is actually TOO MUCH acid. I know!
Check my factsheet on the A-Z for more on that: GERD/INDIGESTION/ACID REFLUX. I’ve put an easy at-home check on there to see if that could be your issue, try it. It usually amazes people!
H pylori infection is another really big cause, and most people have no idea they have it. Check the factsheet on H Pylori out here.
So, instead of reaching for the antacids, this year, why not protect your stomach lining and try these natural remedies? They’re useful to have in all year round, of course, too.

Turmeric. Clinical research shows that taking turmeric 500 mg four times daily for a week relieves indigestion in 64% more patients than taking placebo. There’s also evidence that curcumin, the main constituent in turmeric, can reduce severity similarly to omeprazole – although it doesn’t offer additional benefits when taken together with omeprazole, so it’s no good doing both.
Artichoke. Taking artichoke leaf extract 640 mg three times daily has been shown to improve symptoms and quality of life in people with mild dyspepsia. It stimulates bile flow. Actually, though, I think if artichoke helps, it’s likely because a person is not digesting fats down that well, so you might do better with a synergistic compound that includes lipase, the fat-digesting enzyme, like this.
Peppermint. My fave. I use a drop of peppermint essential oil in hot water, but that’s maybe a bit strong for most people! Peppermint and caraway tea can work really well. Some clinical research shows that taking a combination of peppermint and caraway oil improves reduces indigestion, pain and mild stomach spasms. Try this delayed release one.
Finally, don’t forget to do some repair work if indigestion or acid is a regular thing for you. Try this, and check the full protocol and more suggestions I’ve given on the factsheet.
I truly hope that helps. Enjoy your festivities, hopefully without any nasty after-effects. Which reminds me – I’ll send you my top tip on avoiding hangovers next! And I promise it’s not: ‘don’t drink!’
