Can High Histamine Affect Fertility?

I’d not thought of this actually until I saw an article from Nouveau Health asking the question. OK, they are trying to sell their Toxaprevent product (which actually I do rate and recommend in the Histamine Factsheet as it is an excellent histamine binder), but they do make some interesting points in it so I thought it was worth sharing for any of you trying to conceive.

You can read the whole article here – I like the references given at the bottom actually so you can find out more.

Histamine can cause the contraction (tightening) of smooth muscle in the uterus, making it more difficult for the fertilised egg to implant and develop as there is a smaller surface area for it to attach too.

Additionally, high levels of histamine can lead to inflammation in the reproductive tract, making it less hospitable for conception.

Furthermore, histamine can also interfere with ovulation and hormonal balance, both of which are critical for successful conception.

Fascinating. So, as well as the advice I give on my Fertility Factsheet in the A-Z, I will now add: make sure histamine is not excessive in the body.

Could it be a hidden issue behind your conception difficulties? Worth a thought, I’d say. If you’re thinking of conceiving, maybe make sure first.

I always say taking 3-4 months to get both partners’ health into tip-top condition before starting to try for a baby is so crucial, both for an easier pregnancy and, most importantly, for the health of your baby as it is born and in later life. Most people really don’t realise that what you do before conception and in the early days and weeks of life can have a really big impact on later-life health.

For how to test histamine levels, avoid histamine build up or lower already excessive histamine, see the Histamine Factsheet.
