I couldn’t quite believe what I was reading in the Daily Telegraph the other day. Instead of taking the opportunity to put the objectives of the NHS firmly centred around patient care, the government has ignored recent calls from inquiries in the light of recent care issues to take better care of patients and instead:
…the redrafted constitution, quietly released last week, simply states that the health service will “aspire” to put patients first.
What the heck does that mean? We will try to put patients first in our healthcare system but other (financial, managerial, self-serving???) considerations might have to take precedence…?
You honestly couldn’t make it up. Sorry, rant over. I really value our NHS but it does need a shot in the arm of common sense if it is to continue to do what it was originally created for. Too many managers and not enough allowing doctors and nurses to care currently in my view.
