Gene Test Helps Chemo Decision

Daily Telegraph “How Likely Is It That My Breast Cancer Will Return?”

For women with early stage oestrogen-dependent breast cancer there is a test which can find out how likely it is to spread and whether you really need chemo, with its distressing side-effects.

The test is called Onco type DX which is a genomic assay.  Cells are taken from the tumour and 21 genes are analysed.  The test is widely used in USA and has been validated by 13 studies in over 4000 UK patients.  It costs £2500 in UK, but NICE is looking into the treatment for the NHS.
