COVID and the link with Obesity: Why?

I note the news items today linking obesity rates with COVID deaths. These were sparked by research released today by the World Obesity Study.

Countries with high levels of overweight people, such as the UK and the US, have the highest death rates from Covid-19, a landmark report reveals, prompting calls for governments to urgently tackle obesity, as well as prioritising overweight people for vaccinations.

About 2.2 million of the 2.5 million deaths from Covid were in countries with high levels of overweight people, says the report from the World Obesity Federation. Countries such as the UK, US and Italy, where more than 50% of adults are overweight, have the biggest proportions of deaths linked to coronavirus.

I think we did say this a good few months ago, and I have been encouraging you to lose weight with the Belly Fat Plan if you need to. Honestly, it’s easier to do than you think, I promise.

Then, I also saw a great article from WDDTY about it too and I’ve been meaning to share it with you. It’s a simple explanation of why there is such a link – sugar – insulin -obesity – inflammation. I really couldn’t have put it better myself.

First off, we know that American and British people have suffered more deaths than elsewhere in Europe. It can’t be solely down to government incompetence, because other countries have been slow to respond to the virus with adequate equipment, lockdowns, social distancing  and the like.  It might have far more to do with the fact that both populations are among the unhealthiest in the West….

Britain’s rates of overweight and obesity—now 63 percent of all adults—are rising faster than those of any other developed nation.

Britain is now sixth heaviest of the OECD’s 35-member club of wealthy nations and one of five countries suffering from “historically high” rates of obesity since the 1990s.  Since that time, rates of obesity have increased by 92 percent in the UK, considerably worse than even the 65 percent increase in the US over the same period.

The article then describes the journey from sugar to inflammation and how it affects our immune system capability. They conclude:

Before we look to nanotechnology and cutting-edge medicine to ‘improve’ the human system, it’s vital to keep the extraordinary system we were born with in top working order.

Dead right. We’re missing a trick here. You can read the full post on WDDTY here: Cut Sugar, Control the Virus.

Belly Fat Plan cover

I wrote the Belly Fat Plan for this precise mechanism. People who have increased belly fat have it because of a lack of insulin control in the body, and inflammation results. Please do take a look and ask your family members to too, if you dare!
