I’m always on the look-out for things that help repair the body barriers such as leaky gut, leaky blood-brain barrier, leaky skin (think allergic dermatitis, eczema etc). So, I was interested to see this early research on Vitamin D for sunburn.
High doses apparently helped lower inflammation, which the researchers expected, but they were surprised to see it actually activated skin repair mechanisms too.
There’s a way to go and they were using high doses, but keeping Vitamin D levels nice and stable should always be part of barrier repair. It seems sun can heal the very sunburn it causes because it promotes Vitamin D production. Neat.
High-dose vitamin D can heal sunburn
“Vitamin D helps promote protective barriers in the skin by rapidly reducing inflammation. What we did not expect was that at a certain dose, vitamin D not only was capable of suppressing inflammation, it was also activating skin repair,” said researcher Kurt Lu.
