Processed meat – such as bacon, burgers and sausages – is a major cause of type 2 diabetes.

Eating just 50g of processed meat each day – equivalent to one sausage or two slices of bacon – increases your risk of developing diabetes by 51 per cent. This is according to a recent study by the Harvard School of Public Health which says that substituting one serving of processed meat for a healthier option – such as nuts, whole grains, beans or fish – can reduce the risk of diabetes by as much as 23 per cent. That’s huge for such a little change, isn’t it?

That doesn’t mean you can’t have burgers and sausages, though. It is pretty simple to buy good quality organic mince and make your own square sausage patties like they have in the US, and burgers. You can make them with pure meat and seasoning or add some flavour with onions, herbs and even bring the meat content down by mashing in some sweet potato or rice.

Sheepdrove Farm have said they will make sausages for us – see here for more on this. Let me have your sausage recipes asap and let’s get some made!
